Happy Birthday to Me, Canada, and Not Kristian

THE DISPATCH

The one year I got my own cake… That’s Kristian in the back, peeking over a shoulder.

The Tuesday Dispatch

Today is my Birthday and my younger brother Kristian’s birthday is tomorrow.

We’re 3 years and 1 day apart.

Our birthdays, since he was born, have been shared and always celebrated on his birthday. With his birthday being Canada day it meant most people had the day off so it was easier for everyone to get together. I get it, now.

Apart from the odd year our cake was a slab/sheet cake from Safeway that read “Happy Birthday Lee & Kristian”. Our shared birthday parties were full of the cool kids from my class, obviously, and the common assortment of peers from his.

I still vividly remember driving home from the Canada Day Celebrations one year, I was 8 and he was 5, and he was having a meltdown because he learned that the fireworks were not for him.

Nor was the giant “could feed a village” sized birthday cake.

Or the bands.

His world came crashing down and while he sat there in the seat sobbing, I stared gleefully out the window with a smirk on my face.

He found out because I had told him.

Now, many years later, I sit at my computer this morning reminiscing just how good those days were. The 80s and 90s were amazing. Maybe it’s just youthful naivety but the world seemed slower and more meaningful then.

Family gatherings where everyone came. BBQ hot dogs, cases of Kokanee, green Super Soakers, Gi Joes and Power Rangers.

Topics of discussion lasted longer than a fleeting moment in an algorithmic driven conversation. People would formulate opinions slower, I’m sure they dug in just as hard once formed, as humans do, but I can’t help that think that it was different.

That’s a real problem now, these fast ideas, and how we chase them. Nothing is slow.

So today as I sit in a coffee shop writing this newsletter and I’m grateful for the moments I get like these to slow down and think. I’m going to tuck my computer away for a few hours after this, make a waffle and probably watch a movie while I wait for the family to wake up.

Oh, and one more thing! I’d like to use this opportunity to wish Canada a very happy birthday tomorrow. It’s your day, just for you. I hope you, Canada, enjoy it and spend it celebrating with all the cool people that will undoubtably be at your party.

And if you’re at a Canada Day celebration in Kamloops and some good looking guy shows up claiming it’s also his birthday… he’s due for 41 birthday bumps.

See to it that he gets them for me, would ya?

Take a look and let me know if you’d like a demo, I can show you this in about 7 minutes.

Have a great week all,
