Quick notes from the road.

Hello Everyone,

Logging some miles every day, I’ve been keeping notes as I go. The kind of roadside observations you make when you’re bored to tears and your backside is reminding you that you left your youth behind - years ago.

Here’s a few of them:

  • Solar farms in southern Alberta – Not a panel here or there, but whole fields of them, standing in formation like they’re waiting for inspection.

  • Absence of service/drilling rigs – Mile after mile and not a single rig in sight. For this part of the world, that’s unusual.

  • Amazon trucks everywhere – They’ve multiplied like rabbits. Blue vans, white trailers, everywhere you look.

  • Six Giant Tiger store seacans on a train – You don’t load six of anything unless business is good. That bargain-basement empire might be quietly booming.

  • Conestoga-style trailers – Not a rare sight anymore. Those rolling tarp-covered rigs are becoming a big part of the freight landscape.

Now we’re in Winnipeg, where the Red River runs slow, but it wasn’t always so quiet. In 1875, the city appointed its first Harbormaster to oversee commercial river traffic. Steamboats, barges, and tugs moved everything from lumber to livestock along the Red and Assiniboine, and the Harbormaster’s job was to manage docking, navigation, and river safety.

The position lasted well into the 20th century before fading as rail and road took over. Today, the only “traffic” is canoes, geese, and the occasional fishing boat, no Harbormaster required.
