41,000 jobs lost in July, what’s the real story inside mining and energy?

Hello Everyone,

Well, we’re off.

The house is empty, the bags are packed, and the cat is safely tucked away at the kennel (rabies quarantine and all). First stop is Edmonton, where we’ll catch up with our eldest son before continuing the long drive east. It also happens to be our anniversary today, which feels like a good omen. A good day to start something big.

And speaking of starting over…

Canada’s economy shed 41,000 jobs in July, with construction, services, and youth employment all taking a hit. According to StatsCan, long-term unemployment is the worst it’s been (outside of COVID) in over two decades. (Here’s the Reddit thread and source) if you want to dig deeper.

But national numbers only tell part of the story.

What are you seeing on the ground where you are?
Are you hiring? Holding steady? Cutting back?
Are folks flooding in looking for work—or trickling out?

Hit reply and let me know.

I’d love to share a snapshot of what the Mining & Energy audience is seeing in real time. Could be helpful to a lot of people quietly wondering what comes next.

We’ve got 3,600km to think about that kind of thing.

Enjoy the weekend all, next week I’ll be writing from the road, likely somewhere around the center of Canada, geographically speaking.
