If You Work in Mining, Energy, or Oil & Gas ➡️ Check These 5 Things Now on your site.
Hello Everyone,
Every day I pour through dozens of press releases and company updates across the mining, energy, and oil & gas sectors. And naturally, I click through to their websites to learn more.
Here’s what I’ve noticed:
Most of them are making the same handful of mistakes.
It’s not that they’re doing anything wrong, they just haven’t taken the time to do a few key things that make all the difference when it comes to being found, trusted, and taken seriously.
So I turned it into a checklist.
Use it to assess your own site. These are all easy wins that can make a real difference, fast. As you know, I come from a marketing background and have worked in this space for more than 20 years. This is the checklist I’d give my brother to help level up his business.
✅ 1. Claim and Update Your Google Business Profile
Why it matters:
This is the first thing most people see when they search your company name, especially on mobile. If your profile is incomplete, outdated, or unclaimed, you look inactive. Not a good first impression. Regardless of size of business, do this.
What to check:
Is it claimed?
Are your services listed?
Are your hours and phone number correct?
Have you uploaded recent project photos or shop pics?
Fix time: 15 minutes.
✅ 2. Use Real-World Keywords on Your Website
Why it matters:
Search engines (and real humans) need specific terms to connect your services with actual jobs. If your site only says things like “industrial contractor” or “oilfield support,” you’re invisible for all the work you actually do.
What to check:
Do you list the actual services you offer in the way you talk about them?
Can a site manager or project lead find you by Googling the service they need?
Examples to include:
“Tailings pond liner installation”
“B-train hauling in NE BC”
“Hydrovac daylighting”
“Mobile welding for mine sites”
✅ 3. Write One Good Paragraph for Every Core Service
Why it matters:
Google doesn’t rank one-liners. It needs context. Your customers do too.
What to check:
Does each core service have its own page or section?
Is there a short paragraph explaining where, how, and for whom you do this work?
Fix tip: 2–4 sentences per service is plenty. Keep it real and relatable.
✅ 4. Add a Title Tag and Meta Description for Every Page
Why it matters:
When someone finds you in search results, they see your page title and description first. If you don’t set them, Google makes something up,and it usually makes a mess.
What to check:
Does each page have a proper title?
Does it clearly say what you do and where?
Easy format to follow:
[Service] in [Region] | [Your Company Name]
Then write a one-line description that sounds human.
Example:
Industrial Sandblasting in Fort McMurray | Titan Surface Co.
We provide mobile sandblasting services for oilfield shutdowns and site prep across Northern Alberta.
✅ 5. No One Links to You
Why it matters:
If your website doesn’t have inbound links, meaning other sites pointing to you,Google sees it as a dead end. And so do your potential customers.
But here’s the key: not all backlinks are equal.
One link from a high-authority, industry-relevant site is worth more than 1,000 from random directories, spammy blogs, or link farms.
Google cares about relevance and reputation.
It wants to see that a respected source, like an industry magazine, association, supplier, or even a credible local publication, believes you’re worth linking to.
That kind of link says:
“This company matters in this space.”
And that’s the kind of trust signal that helps you climb the search rankings and win new opportunities.
What to check:
Are any respected sites linking to your website?
Has your company ever been mentioned in an article, and if so,does that article include a link?
Are you earning links from sites in your actual industry, or just general business listings?
Fix tip:
Skip the link-buying schemes and low-quality backlink services. They won’t help, and they could hurt.
Instead, focus on earning links from places that matter in your field. Think:
Industry roundups
Supplier spotlights
Conference coverage
Association profiles
Project success stories published on high-ranking domains
You don’t need 100 links, you need the right ones.
Because one solid link from a well-ranked, relevant site can move the needle more than 1,000 throwaways ever will.
