Think of all the precious metals people lined up for yesterday...

Hello Everyone,

It’s a short one today; I’m planning to spend some time relaxing now that the holiday rush is over. Yesterday, as I drove past the mall, I found myself reflecting on how consumer consumption has evolved over the years.

A century ago, consumers often sought gold or silver—materials that were rare and precious, symbolizing wealth and effort. These metals were saved for, treasured, and considered special luxuries.

Fast-forward to the 1950s, when Santa was delivering science kits containing dangerously reactive, and occasionally radioactive, materials to children. These kits—intended for play and exploration—were often unsupervised. What could possibly go wrong?

What could go wrong?

Today, as I pass the mall, I see shoppers with bags full of consumer electronics. There’s little awareness of the rarity of the metals inside these goods. Fifty years ago, materials like yttrium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, gadolinium, europium, terbium, and dysprosium were nearly impossible to obtain. Now, toddlers play with tablets containing them.

We truly live in the future. As a child of the 1980s, I’m constantly amazed at how Jetsons-like our world has become.

Here’s to digging into the good stuff—I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
