This highway has hauled a lot of riches for Canadians

Hello Everyone,

It’s 4am PST and I’m about to wake my son up to head to the rink for an early game today, sitting in the conference room of the hotel overlooking the highway the Coquihalla Highway, it’s hard not to think about its connection to BC’s mining history. Built between 1984 and 1990, the highway follows the old Kettle Valley Railway, which was abandoned in the 1960s.

This area, known as the Coquihalla Gold Belt, has seen gold exploration since the 1850s, thanks to the Hozameen fault system and Coquihalla serpentine belt. While the highway was built to connect the coast with the interior, it also opened up easier access to these mineral-rich areas.

Fun fact: over 27.5 million cubic meters of material were moved during construction—way more than the Hope-Princeton Highway. Though I doubt they checked that pile for pay. And with that, I’m off to the arena for an early game.
