The M&E Dispatch - 023

Maybe it's time to start looking forward to make change, rather than trying to undo the past.

Hello Everyone,

With the promise of tariffs, I know plenty of you are already feeling uneasy about projections for 2025.

Softwood lumber is already taking a beating, and these 25% tariffs will undoubtedly pile onto the pain. Add in the dropping dollar, and it’s starting to feel like we’re back in the ’80s—only this time without the big hair or hard-rocking legends.

The Oil & Gas industry had some hope early on that Alberta’s UCP might use a second Trump term to get the Keystone Pipeline project back on the table. But even those hopes seem to be fading fast under the weight of these looming tariffs.

Meanwhile, other nations seem to be playing the long game when it comes to resource-related projects—planning on timelines that span decades, even centuries. Here in Canada, we’re stuck thinking in terms of a handful of years, if we’re lucky. Look at the Site C Dam—how many election cycles did it have to survive just to make it to production?

But what if we flipped the script? What if we used this time to think bigger and build for the future? The northwest passage is opening up more and more each year. We’ve got deep-water ports waiting to be developed and trading partners who’d love to come to the table.

Sure, these things take time and money. But think about it—how great could we be as a nation if we finally started planning for the long haul? Projects that outlast politicians and election cycles. Imagine the Canada we could build.

Sure, the United States has been our “closest and best” trading partner for years, but maybe it’s time we stop acting like we’re in an exclusive relationship. Unless you’re Newfoundland, you know there are plenty of other fish in the sea. Maybe it's time we have some dinner dates with some unlikely world leaders.

Just to see what’s out there…

In the world of environmental remediation, oil spills and saltwater contamination are significant challenges that leave lasting scars on ecosystems and economies alike. Traditional methods like excavation, trucking, and landfilling soil are costly and often displace the problem rather than solve it.

RemediMaker by Vande Consulting is a groundbreaking spray-on solution that treats soil contaminants in place, providing a more sustainable, effective, and affordable alternative. Check it out!
