The M&E Dispatch - 022

72% voted yes for the new mine and Trump promises 25% tariffs when he takes office in January - Oh! And our loonie's gone looney.

Hello Everyone,

Do you support the development and operations of the metallurgical coal mine at Grassy Mountain?

That was the question posed in the referendum that Crowsnest Pass residents voted on yesterday. Despite heavy snowfall the turnout was nearly record level with the outcome being a resounding “yes”. With 72% of votes cast in favour of the Grassy Mountain Coal Mine the valley has chosen to utilize their mountains in a way that flies in the face of tourism.

With CPKC now owning the rails from Canada to Mexico (a bit of hyperbole, indulge me here) and Canada finding ways to be a bigger player in the resource world, how much weight will the threats of tariffs actually carry?

While Trump has claimed Canada has a large faucet that can be turned to divert water to California the truth is not far off. We are the source of many major US waterways and if you’re into some light reading the Boundary Water Treaty of 1909 is a wonderful read.

With his quest to tear up NAFTA, his displeasure with our existing relationship regarding NATO and the threat of tariffs you have to wonder if his next target will be our water?

Will we suddenly find that issues such as the Selenium levels in the Elk and Kootenai Rivers are moving to the forefront on a national level to be used as chess pieces?

I have no doubt that we’ll be entering in a Water War of sorts with our neighbour to the south, the only question will be how hard will we be willing to dig in our heels as a nation to fight?

As I write this, our dollar is at $0.71 USD, this is the power they wield, our nation’s endless pursuit of dark-bleak-winter comfort driven consumerism will no doubt lead to calls for concessions as the cost of good climb.

We, however, draw our power from our water, coal, lumber and hydro. Those are the resources that hit the hardest where it counts for Americans.

The only question is how willing Canadians will be to absorb short term dollar pains while our leaders dig in at a resource level?

Good thing you’re all sitting on stacks of gold and silver 😉
