The M&E Dispatch - 021

Hello Everyone,

After my injury a few weeks ago I spent a bit of time thinking back to my days in the oil patch. From punching holes on a big old triple over by Nordegg to spinning rod wrenches during the spring on a service rig owned by a buddy’s dad in southern AB.

Some of my best memories as a young adult are from those days. Wandering off the end of the lease to get away from the light plant to see the Northern Lights or watching the fighter jets rip overhead while on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range are highlights for sure.

Then there’s the laughable memories, things like pondering why they call it “The Knowledge Box” or how most puddles around the rig would have the temperature of “tingly” due to the countless electrical cords being run through them. Good times indeed.

I’ve been keeping my eye on the CAOEC Rig Map over the past couple weeks and we’re starting to see an uptick in rigs that appear to be “Moving” and a decrease in “Down” statuses. Are the cries of “Drill, Baby, Drill” from our southern neighbours echoing optimism through the boardrooms of some of our domestic producers?

At the time of writing the report for Canadian Rigs was as follows. Active: 188, Moving: 21, Down: 151. Curious to see where the count will be at in early February.
