Spies, Smelter, Untold Riches and Seabiscuit! - I told you last week that Trail BC was one of the most interesting mining communities.

Hello Everyone,

Last week I said Trail was one of Canada’s most interesting Mining communities and I’m curious - have you heard of the P-9 Project? Maybe you’ve heard of it’s other moniker, the Manhattan Project. You see, the smelter in Trail played a crucial role in developing Heavy Water for the United States at the onset of WWII and while the US plants shut down production at the end of the war, Trail’s facility ran until 1956. Well into Cold War Territory.

It was a big deal for Cominco, Trail and Canada. A story worthy of movie with clandestine services from around the world roaming the streets of Trail, likely staying in the very hotels one may stay in today. Cominco even had it’s very own armoured vehicle built by the millwrights.

Who knows what was discussed in the Blaylock Mansion with Selwyn at the helm of Cominco and US officials eager to spend Uncle Sam’s hard earned money.

If you find yourself heading through southern BC make the side trip through Trail and Rossland. Have a sausage sandwich from Ferraro foods and maybe you’ll run into Ray Ferraro doing the same.
